Brewers’ Abner Uribe’s DX Chop Celebration in Video Ripped by Manager Pat Murphy, ‘Unacceptable’

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Abner Uribe threw a shutout inning of relief during his team’s 6-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday but generated far more attention for his DX chop celebration after striking out Alec Burleson.

And manager Pat Murphy was not happy about it.

“That’s unacceptable,” Murphy told reporters. “I don’t know what got over him. I mean, he’s been an emotional guy. But that kind of thing, that’s just not how we do things and I was embarrassed by it.”

Uribe struck out Burleson looking with two runners on and two outs in the eighth inning. Burleson challenged the call, but it was upheld as the pitcher was celebrating and leaving the mound.

“I love the kid. Believe me, I love the kid,” Murphy said. “There’s so much good in this kid. He’s been so great for us in so many ways, but that’s unacceptable. So, whatever’s going on, you can’t tolerate that. For his teammates, and for everything, it’s not going to be tolerated, that’s all there is to it.”

Uribe and Cardinals catcher Iván Herrera also exchanged words after a high and inside pitch earlier in the frame.

“Everyone here knows me and knows who I am, and knows I have a bit of a history of being emotional out there,” Uribe told reporters through an interpreter. “I think first I owe an apology to the Brewers. I owe an apology to my teammates, to my manager, all the bosses of the team. I understand that’s unacceptable, to go out there and react in a way like that.

“But at the same time, I don’t think it’s unprofessional for their manager to be making signs towards our dugout saying that he’s going to be hitting guys,” Uribe said. “There was an event that occurred during the practice today, too, and I don’t think that was right. So, I have my teammates’ back always.”

The game was never in doubt after the Brewers pushed across five runs in the fifth inning, and Uribe worked out of trouble with two strikeouts. It was part of a collective shutout effort from the Milwaukee staff, which began with starter Kyle Harrison allowing just four hits in six innings of work.

Uribe was excellent for Milwaukee last season with a 1.75 ERA but has seen that number balloon to 4.19 in 2025.

Despite his overall struggles, the Brewers are still in first place in the National League Central and will look to finish a three-game sweep of the Cardinals on Wednesday.
