First Alert Weather: Scattered afternoon showers remain in this week’s forecast

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Good Wednesday evening! We had scattered thundershowers develop this afternoon pushing off to the north-northwest. Nothing has been severe, but pockets of heavy rain and reduced visibility were common as the storms moved through. Areas that haven’t received any rainfall remain in the low to mid 80s with a heat index approaching 90°F. Plan for a mostly cloudy sky this evening with showers and thunderstorms diminishing after sunset. Temperatures will likely cool near 70°F tomorrow morning. The sky should remain mostly cloudy overnight with only an isolated chance for a shower. Patchy fog remains possible overnight in areas that received rainfall today.

Out The Door Forecast(WBRC)

Scattered storms return Thursday: I highly recommend holding on to the umbrella tomorrow and through the weekend as storm chances will likely continue. The sky will likely remain mostly cloudy tomorrow with highs in the low to mid 80s. It will be another muggy day with a heat index approaching the upper 80s to near 90°F.  Our best chance to see scattered showers and storms form will likely occur between noon and 6 p.m. CDT. Main threat tomorrow afternoon will be pockets of heavy rain and lightning. A strong storm can’t be ruled out, but the threat remains low. Not everyone will see rain tomorrow. If you remain dry, you’ll have a decent chance to see rain Friday and Saturday.

Next Big Thing(WBRC)

Next Big Thing: It looks like a stationary front will lift northwards and stall across north and central Alabama Friday into Saturday. Waves of energy along this front could enhance our chances to see scattered showers and storms during this time frame. Plan for a mostly cloudy sky Friday and Saturday with highs in the lower 80s. Chance to see rain will likely go up to 60-70%. It won’t rain the entire time, but you may encounter some heavy rainfall during the afternoon and evening hours. We’ll have to monitor a low-end threat for flooding thanks to all of the moisture in the atmosphere.

Forecast Rainfall(WBRC)

Scattered storms continue Sunday into Monday: It looks like we’ll hold on to a chance for scattered storms Sunday and Monday. Coverage of rainfall will likely be lower than Friday and Saturday. It will likely remain warm and muggy with highs in the low to mid 80s with a 40-50% chance for rain. I wouldn’t cancel any outdoor plans, but just note that you can never rule out a brief shower or storm that could last for 20-30 minutes. When thunder roars, go indoors! Overnight lows are forecast to cool into the upper 60s.

Slightly drier air possible early June: Some of our long-range models are indicating slightly drier air trying to filter into Georgia and the northern half of Alabama early next week around June 2-3, 2026. If this occurs, it won’t be as muggy. Temperatures will also trend slightly below average with highs in the lower 80s. Overnight lows may trend a little cooler too in the mid 60s. Models do indicate more moisture surging northwards from the Gulf around June 5-7th, so whatever dry air moves in will likely be short-lived. You may see social media chatter of a tropical threat in the Gulf during this time frame, but most guidance does not support a tropical system in the Gulf. The most logical thing that will occur is that a stalled boundary could produce more rain and perhaps a weak low. Conditions will be more favorable for tropical development in the eastern Pacific than in the Gulf.
