Postal worker pleads guilty after hundreds of pieces of undelivered mail found in his apartment

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA/Gray News) – An Alabama man who was employed as a contract postal worker for the U.S. Postal Service admitted that he failed to deliver hundreds of pieces of mail.

Timothy Chandler, 23, pleaded guilty to delay or destruction of the mail.

According to Chandler’s written plea agreement, he had a delivery route that included homes and businesses.

Alabama authorities said an investigation began after Robertsdale police responded to a complaint last November about a large amount of undelivered mail found in an apartment that had been recently rented to Chandler.

Authorities said it was enough mail to fill about eight post office bins.

Officers reported finding mail on the living room floor, under chair cushions, in the stove, on top of cabinets and inside the apartment’s refrigerator.

More mail was in trash bags, and several greeting cards sent through the mail had been opened, according to the plea document.

Investigators also found 66 empty bins.

A federal judge set sentencing for Aug. 31. Chandler faces a maximum of five years in prison, but prosecutors have agreed to recommend leniency.
