Multi-million dollar plan aims to fix sports complex traffic woes in South Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A new $30 million plan aims to make getting in and out of the sports complex in South Philadelphia easier for fans.

Traffic has long been the nemesis of sports fans heading to watch games in person.

Even Phillies owner John Middleton gets an earful about the issue.

“Year after year, this is the number one frustration from residents, fans, and even team executives,” said Middleton.

On Thursday, Governor Josh Shapiro, PennDOT and leaders of the four major sports teams in the area — Phillies, Flyers, Sixers and Eagles — announced they are working to change that.

The plans will include a new I-76 Westbound ramp from 7th and Packer Avenue.

“When completed in 2028, it will be used by about 800 vehicles per hour,” says PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll.

The plan for the I-76 Westbound will cost roughly $15 million and is expected to be completed just ahead of the new basketball arena opening in 2030.

After a $6.6 million investment, AI-timed traffic signals will line Broad Street.

“Those signals were off. AI is going to fix that in a big way. Have those signals coordinated, have the traffic flowing,” said Gov Shapiro.

These improvements come after two new turning lanes opened from Front Street onto I-95 North. They provide access for approximately 500 more vehicles per hour.
