Rare May showers on tap for San Diego County over next few days

A low-pressure system will produce sporadic showers across San Diego County through Thursday and make the marine layer about a mile deep in some areas, the National Weather Service says.
The moisture is a welcome surprise. It rarely rains in San Diego in late May. And it will make the chaparral a bit wetter in the backcountry, reducing the risk of wildfires.
San Diego International Airport has received 0.16 inches of rain this month, which is 0.09 inches below average.
Forecasters say the trough will make daytime high temperatures across the inland valleys, foothills and deserts 10 to 15 degrees below average and the mountains as much as 20 degrees below normal.
Coastal areas will be in the upper 60s, close to normal.
The system will also produce winds gusting 35 mph to 45 mph Tuesday through Thursday in the mountain areas and deserts, notably along heavily travelled Interstate 8, east of Alpine. Some gusts could hit 65 mph, strong enough to turn over high-profile vehicles.
