Live Updates: Penn Station Train Fire Injures 5 and Disrupts NJ Transit, Amtrak and L.I.R.R. Service

A fire broke out on a maintenance train in New York’s Penn Station early Friday, injuring five people and disrupting rail service for the morning commute.

Firefighters received an emergency call reporting a fire on a train car at Penn Station at around 1:30 a.m., the Fire Department said. The fire, on track 11, escalated to a second alarm by 2:45 a.m.

The Fire Department said it had deployed 46 fire trucks and 141 personnel. Five rail workers were hurt and two of them with serious injuries were taken to Bellevue Hospital, officials said.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control around 4 a.m., the Fire Department said, and later extinguished it. Its cause was under investigation.

Here’s what we know about service disruptions.

  • The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said on its website early on Friday that the Long Island Rail Road’s service at Penn Station was suspended in both directions. It said that customers could expect delays, cancellations and reroutes on Friday morning.

  • NJ Transit said on its website that its rail service was suspended between Penn Station and Newark Penn Station.

  • On Amtrak, all rail service between New York and New Jersey was temporarily suspended and was not expected to be restored until Friday afternoon, Marc Magliari, an Amtrak spokesman, said in a statement.
