Ukraine is reinforcing its entire 1,085-kilometer border with Belarus, expanding fortifications along the northern frontier as Kyiv warns of possible escalation from the north.
State Border Guard Service spokesman Andriy Demchenko told RBC-Ukraine on Thursday that border guards are carrying out engineering works directly on the border line, while other units of Ukraine’s defense forces are building additional fortifications deeper behind it. He said local authorities are also involved in the effort, under direct instructions from President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“The work that has already been done is now being built on further,” Demchenko said. He added that the entire border with Belarus is protected, but Ukraine continues to strengthen it as the threat from the north remains under review.
Zelensky has previously warned of several possible escalation scenarios involving Belarus, including the risk of Russia trying to widen the war from the northern direction.
While many analysts say there are no signs of an imminent ground offensive from Belarus, Ukrainian officials remain alert to the possibility that Russian forces could use Belarusian territory to pressure or strike Ukraine.
New fortifications along NATO’s eastern flank
Neighboring Baltic states are moving in the same direction of fortification. Latvia has begun installing concrete “dragon’s teeth” anti-tank barriers on its border with Russia as a part of the Baltic Defense Line, a joint fortification effort by Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

UN Blacklists Russian Forces for Sexual Violence in Ukraine
The United Nations on Friday added Russian armed and security forces to its annual blacklist for conflict-related sexual violence for the first time, citing verified abuses against Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilian detainees. The report documented 310 cases in Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine, including rape and torture. Israel was also added to the list over allegations involving Palestinian detainees, while Hamas remained blacklisted over the Oct. 7 attacks.
Lithuania placed similar obstacles at unused checkpoints in late August 2025, while Estonia reinforced the Narva border crossing with anti-tank barriers, heavy metal gates and sliding blocks capable of fully stopping traffic in both directions.
The moves reflect a shared strategic logic across the region – slowing any potential advance near the frontier, buying time for reinforcements, and signalling that both Ukraine and NATO neighbors on Russia’s border intend to resist any possible attacks from their territory.
As of Tuesday, NATO is reportedly preparing plans to rapidly deploy additional corps-level forces to defend the Baltic states in case of conflict with Russia, according to Reuters.
The move follows Moscow expanding legal provisions for overseas troop use and renewed rhetoric over the rights of Russians in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
