Most people associate Goa with India’s nightlife capital, but the state is so much more than just that. Growing up in Goa, life was and is a mix of nature, culture, drool-worthy food, and the susegad lifestyle. Picnics, beach days, and nature walks are some of my favourite childhood memories and summer activities. There’s something magical about summers in Goa. All year round, as a child, I would wait for summer, and now, when I live away from home, I can’t wait to go back, even if it’s to humidity, bad hair days, and a dreadful tan. The best summer activities in Goa are the ones away from crowded and touristy places. If the overdone, same old itinerary bores you, then read on for the ideal summer fun as suggested by a local.
Why visit Goa in the summer?

With sun, sand, and seas, Goa is the ideal summer destination for all ages. The peak season is over, and you will find less crowded spaces, free-flowing traffic, and hotels and flights with great deals. Summer is also the time for laidback activities in Goa, and to experience the true meaning of susegad. It’s a time you can enjoy the state, unlike December, which is filled with herds of tourists and no locals in sight. If you truly want to experience Goa like a local, summer is the best time to visit.

Day at the beach
Parasailing in Goa | Image credit: Vicky T M/Pexels
There’s no better feeling in the world than putting on a swimsuit and lathering your body up with sunscreen to take a dip in the sea. As I write this, I can almost smell the sand and feel the sun rays and the sea breeze caressing my face.
The sea in itself brings me so much joy, but add water sports to it, and you get the perfect beach day. Most beaches in Goa have water sports like jet skis and banana boat rides. My favourite is parasailing, and it’s even better when done in pairs. When you’re at the beach, take your partner and harness up to enjoy the water from above.
After a refreshing swim, sip on a cold beer at a beach shack and tuck into a plate of recheado prawns with French fries. You’re never too old to build sandcastles, so don’t forget to carry your shovels. And as they say, you don’t need a professional pedicure — a walk along the shore, with shimmering waters and swaying coconut trees, is good enough.
Try out hidden gems and local favourites rather than the tourist-recommended spots. Visit beaches like Agonda and Velsao for white sand, blue waters, and a tide that will test your swimming skills.
Fontainhas

Fontainhas is a neighbourhood in the heart of Goa’s capital, Panaji. The lanes are famous for their colourful and vibrant Portuguese-style houses. It is surrounded by famous bars, pubs, cafes, and restaurants. If you’re in the mood for a delicious meal and bar hopping overlooking the Mandovi River, then you must visit Fontainhas.
Fontainhas is my weekend getaway. I begin by visiting my favourite café, Bodega, which lies within the Sunaparanta Art Centre. I always order fresh kokum juice and their iconic red velvet cupcake. I then visit the art gallery, located in an old converted Portuguese house. It’s the perfect start to your day.
After that, I walk through the colourful lanes of Rua 31 de Janeiro and visit as many cafes as I can. I often go to the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, which is close to Fontainhas and in Panaji City. It is famous for its architecture and location.
Did you know?
The first printing press in India was brought by Portuguese missionaries and established in Goa in 1556.
If I’m in the mood for authentic Italian food, then I stop by Casanoni for dinner. But I’m a regular at my favourite restaurant, Tataki. Its sushi and cocktails are my ideal dinner date.
After that, it’s time for some bar hopping. I would recommend starting your night at Joseph Bar, an iconic and famous tavern amongst the locals. You must try its popular feni cocktails. Then move on to For The Record – Vinyl Bar for an artsy vibe. If you like live music, visit BEBDE.
Drop by K Bar and MTW for creative cocktails and good vibes, which are not exactly in Fontainhas but are close to the neighbourhood. End your night at DTR (Down the Road), a bar famous for its music and alcohol.
Kayaking

Have you ever gone kayaking in the sea? It’s quite different from the experience on a river or a lake. To my utter delight, it doesn’t really involve much paddling since the waves are sufficient enough to take you afar.
I recommend you go kayaking to see the sunset or sunrise. The view is divine and is Instagram-worthy.
T+L tip
Palolem Beach is famous for kayaking, but if you wish to visit a quieter, smaller, and lesser-known spot, visit Hollant Beach.
Tambdi Surla

My father loves road trips and picnics. Growing up, we would always wonder when and where the next picnic would be. Sometimes it was at the beach; otherwise, a spring or a waterfall. Last summer, my father decided that we were going to visit the Tambdi Surla temple. It’s one of the oldest temples in Goa and is set on the outskirts, bordering Karnataka. It is an ASI-protected monument and is surrounded by mountains and lush greenery.
T+L tip
Activities in Goa can be tiring; keep yourself hydrated at all times.
After visiting the temple, we drove around looking for a stream my father remembered visiting once. Finding it involved a tiny trek, but the view was worth it. The stream was deep enough that we could swim in it. The water was cold and clear, it had these tiny fish that kept nibbling on our skin; it was like an Ichthyotherapy or a fish spa.
After the swim, we laid a blanket on the ground close to the water and ate a delicious Goan meal. Tambdi Surla was indeed the perfect picnic spot, and you must visit it.
Chorao Island

Chorao is one of the most beautiful islands in Goa. The island is not connected to the mainland by any bridge or roadway since the people want to preserve its nature and beauty. To reach Chorao, you will have to hop onto a ferry at Ribandar.
My family and I would always book a villa on the island for a few days every summer with my father’s childhood friends and their families. While we were on that island, we barely used the internet or our phones. We spent our days swimming, fishing, and cycling.
You can also take a mangrove boat ride from the island to spot fish and birds. It’s the perfect destination for a nature detox and will let you experience the true ‘Goan life’.

Sunsets & sunrises in Goa
Ozran Beach | Image credit: Carra Fernandes
Goa has several amazing sunset spots, but a few are hidden gems only known to locals. If you’re in the south, visit the heart-shaped lake in Bogmalo. It’s a beautiful natural lagoon shaped like a heart on a cliff overlooking the sea. Watching the sunset from here is an experience you do not want to miss. It involves a 10-15-minute walk, but the view is worthwhile.
If you’re living in the north (Vagator), visit Ozran Beach. It’s a small, hidden beach cove below the Ozran Beach road that is one of the most popular nightclub streets in Goa. Clubs like Raeth, Noah, and others are just above the ‘little Vagator beach’. My friends and I once ended up there after a night of partying. The sunrise was breathtaking, and it was the perfect way to unwind.
Snorkelling and scuba diving

Grande Island is a rocky, uninhabited island in South Goa. Locals call it ‘Bat Island’, a name that was used by Portuguese sailors who noticed the large population of bats on the island.
The island’s shore has clear water and coral reefs and is a famous scuba diving and snorkelling destination. I’ve never been to the island, but it’s a must-do activity on my 2026 summer bucket list.
