Wrexham care worker ‘overwhelmed’ at meeting King Charles III

Helen Briscoe, 59, from Hope, was invited to a royal garden party at Buckingham Palace in recognition of her service to the community.

The head housekeeper at Pendine Park attended alongside Wrexham Mayor Cllr Tina Mannering, with whom she has supported more than 500 civic engagements.

Ms Briscoe said: “It was the stuff of dreams.

“We were both overwhelmed that with so many VIPs all around he should take the time to speak with us.

“Tina even pointed out to him the historic Lady Consort chain which I was wearing.”

She described the “dazzling” ceremony and the honour of meeting other guests who had also made a difference in their communities, but said meeting the King was a “standout moment.”

The garden party invitation came as a surprise, following a nomination in recognition of Ms Briscoe’s dedication to Wrexham.

Mario Kreft MBE, proprietor of Pendine Park, said: “Helen is an extremely efficient housekeeper who puts in 100 per cent for us, making sure our residents are as comfortable as possible.

“She is passionate about doing a good job so it is wonderful to know that she has had the chance to enjoy such a Royal treat.”

During her year supporting the mayor, Ms Briscoe wore the Lady Consort chain, an heirloom featuring gold, Tudor roses, and a portrait of Queen Alexandra.

She said: “Wrexham Council is very proud to have such a beautiful piece among its Mayoral regalia.

“We believe there are only two of these particular style of chains in the world and the other one is owned by the Royal family.”

She also described how the experience had deepened her lifelong friendship with Cllr Mannering.

Ms Briscoe said: “We’ve always been great pals and I think the last year has made us even more appreciative of the power of good friendships.

“I’ve always been aware of Tina’s community spirit but it has been eye-opening for me to witness first hand the amount of work she puts in to promoting everything Wrexham.”

During the trip, the pair also explored Covent Garden and visited the National Gallery, where Ms Briscoe was especially moved to see Van Gogh’s iconic Sunflowers painting.

She said: “It was another glowing and treasured memory from what really was the trip of a lifetime.”
