E9, UCLA wins 6-5

UCLA uses a pair of solo home runs to tie the game, and then, with runners on the corners and one out, an RBI single saves UCLA’s season and ends Virginia Tech’s. Bruins win 6-5.

M9, VT leads 5-3:

The Hokies added a crucial insurance run to open the inning, With Ethan Gibson doubling before Hudson Lutterman singled to right to bring him in. The next three batters went down in order. 

Madden Clement is looking for the final three outs.

E8, VT leads 4-3:

A pair of HBP ended the day for Griffin Stieg. The Hokies went to Madden Clement as the lineup turned over to the top with two on and one out. Clement buckled down, inducing a pair of high fly balls that were both caught for outs to end the inning.

M8, VT leads 4-3:

UCLA went to Zach Strickland in the eighth, who set the first two batters down quietly before Ethan Ball unloaded on the first pitch he saw, blasting it over the right field wall and giving the Hokies a 4-3 lead.

E7, Tied 3-3:

Griffin Stieg took the mound in the seventh, setting the side down in order on just nine pitches, striking out Cashel Dugger to end the frame.

M7, Tied 3-3:

Ethan Gibson knotted the game up at three apiece with a leadoff home run to left-center field. The Bruins then went to Cal Randal out of the bullpen, who kept the Hokies from taking the lead while working around a walk.

E6, UCLA leads 3-2:

Preston Crowl worked around a one-out single and a two-out walk to toss a scoreless frame, taking this game to the seventh with a one-run difference.

M6, UCLA leads 3-2:

Virginia Tech went down in order in the sixth. Preston Crowl remains on the mound for the Hokies on the other side of the ball. 

E5, UCLA leads 3-2:

Preston Crowl took the mound in the fifth and quickly surrendered a one-out solo homer to Will Gasparino. Around him, the other three batters went down to end the inning

A two-out homer from Owen Petrich tied the game up, with all three batters around him going down relatively quietly.

E4, UCLA leads 2-1:

UCLA claimed its first lead of the day in the fourth, getting started with a lead-off home run from Cashel Dugger. Both Phoenix Call and Jarrod Hocking hit one-out doubles to score the second run. Renfrow escaped further damage, setting down Cholowsky and Levu to end the inning.

M4, VT leads 1-0:

UCLA starter Michael Barnett set the Virginia Tech side down in order in the fourth, using just six pitches. He’s at 55 on the afternoon.

A one-out walk and single put a pair of runners on for UCLA, but Brett Renfrow was able to escape another jam, inducing a pair of pop ups to end the frame. He is at 68 pitches through just three innings of work.

M3, VT leads 1-0:

Virginia Tech took the lead for the first time all weekend, using a one-out walk from Owen Petrich and a two-out single from Sam Grube to plate its first run of the game, taking a 1-0 lead.

After escaping the bases-loaded jam in the opening frame, Renfrow set the side down in order in the second.

Virginia Tech went down in order, finished by a strong play from Roch Cholowsky to get Nick Locurto for the third out.

UCLA paired a leadoff single with a pair of one-out walks to load the bases, but Brett Renfrow kept the Bruins off the board, winning a pair of consecutive full-count battles for a strikeout and a groundout, ending the frame.

The Hokies struck out twice in the first inning before a two-out HBP put Ethan Ball on base. Henry Cooke skied one against the shift, but UCLA’s Jarrod Hocking was able to make the catch in right field for the third out.

Los Angeles — Virginia Tech is looking to survive past today in the Los Angeles regional’s first elimination game. They will be facing off against No. 1 national seed UCLA at 1:00 PST (4:00 EST) on ESPN+. If the Hokies win, they will eliminate the Bruins in shocking fashion. If Virginia Tech loses, they will head back to Blacksburg with their season in the books. It is a win-or-go-home scenario for Virginia Tech today.
