NY Giants work out Odell Beckham Jr., 3 other veteran wide receivers

The New York Giants are not putting all of their veteran wide receiver eggs in the Odell Beckham Jr. basket.

Braxton Berrios, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Anthony Miller also worked out for the Giants.

New York has a need for veteran wide receiver help after Gunner Olszewski suffered a torn Achilles on Friday. Malik Nabers’ availability for the beginning of the season is in question as he rehabs from a pair of surgeries to repair a torn ACL and other knee damage. Darius Slayton has missed spring workouts due to surgery for a sports hernia.

Of the non-Beckham trio, Smith-Schuster might be the most intriguing name. Smith-Schuster is a nine-year veteran who spent three of the last four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, where Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy was on the coaching staff.

Smith-Schuster, 29, caught 33 passes in 17 games last season. He caught 78 passes for 933 yards for the Chiefs in 2022. Smith-Schuster has one 1,000-yard receiving season on his resume, but that was back in 2018. That season, he caught a career-high 111 passes for 1,426 yards while playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who selected him in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Smith-Schuster has 481 career receptions.

Berrios is interesting because his skillset most closely aligns with what the Giants lost due to Olszewski’s injury. The 30-year-old seven-year veteran has been a backup wide receiver, as well as a punt and kickoff returner during his career.

Berrios caught just six passes while playing in four games for the Houston Texans last season. He did not catch any in six games for the Miami Dolphins in 2024. Berrios has 140 career receptions, including a career-best 46 for the New York Jets in 2021.

Berrios has averaged 11.3 yards on 109 career punt returns, and 24.9 yards on 91 career kickoff returns.

Miller, 31, was a first-round pick by the Chicago Bears in the 2018 NFL Draft — when Nagy was the Bears’ head coach. Miller caught 134 passes for Nagy and the Bears in three seasons, but has only played in six NFL games with 12 receptions since the 2021 season. He also has some kickoff and punt return experience, but has done neither since 2020.

Miller is familiar to Giants coach John Harbaugh because he spent the last two seasons on Baltimore’s practice squad. Miller played in two games for Baltimore in 2024, the only two games he has played in since 2021.
