DONE DEAL: Tottenham announce the free agent signing of Andy Robertson

The summer transfer window hasn’t formally opened yet, but that hasn’t stopped clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, from agreeing to sign players. Take, for example, Andrew Robertson, the Scotland international, formerly of Liverpool. We’ve known about his potential free agent signing for weeks, and now the club has made it official — Robertson has agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur after the completion of his Liverpool contract. The signing will be made OFFICIALLY official when the registration window opens, but it’s a done deal. Andy Robertson is a Tottenham player.

Note that there’s no number on the back of the kit — I suspect that will be decided later. Robertson wore #26 at Liverpool, but that number is practically sacred at Spurs. If Robertson is allowed his Liverpool kit number with his new club, he’ll be the first person to play under that number since Ledley King retired in 2009.

Interestingly, Robertson’s Tottenham connections go back deeper — early in his career as a young player at Hull City, Robertson’s captain at the time was none other than Spurs legend and current Club Ambassador Michael Dawson. Robertson also overlapped with the brief Hull City tenure of former Spurs midfielder Tom Huddlestone.

In the official press release, Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi praised Robertson’s ability.

”Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team.

”He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.

“I can’t wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.”

Tottenham Sporting Director Johan Lange also said some things which I’m not going to put here because I don’t trust Lange’s opinions.

Robertson has undoubtedly lost a step from his prime years at Liverpool but he’s a proven leader with tons of experience, and he should have enough in the tank to push Destiny Udogie for a starting role at left back next season.

Fàilte gu Tottenham, Andy!
