Suspect fired 9 rounds before fatal Las Vegas police shooting, authorities say

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A man armed with a shotgun fired nine rounds at traffic and later toward police officers before he was fatally shot near a northeast Las Vegas intersection, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
The shooting happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. on June 3 near East Lake Mead Boulevard and North Sloan Lane. It was Metro’s sixth officer-involved shooting of 2026 and the third fatal police shooting this year in their jurisdiction.
Police officially identified the suspect on Friday as 43-year-old Sergio Flores.
Metro police said dispatchers received several 911 calls reporting a man firing a shotgun into traffic near the intersection on Wednesday.
Surveillance video reviewed by police showed Flores firing multiple times before officers arrived, including at a traffic signal control box that disabled the intersection’s traffic light.
Officers arrived within minutes and repeatedly ordered Flores to drop the shotgun, police said. Authorities said officers first used a less-lethal round in an effort to end the confrontation.
“After the deployment of the low lethal shotgun, officers continued to issue verbal commands for Flores to peacefully surrender, but he again refused, telling officers that they’d have to shoot him,’ Assistant Sheriff Fred Haas said. “Flores then discharged his firearm in the direction of officers, causing our officers to return fire.
Metro Police said Officer Marcos Vega, 28, fired one round. Officer Gianni Rivera, 28, fired seven rounds, and Officer Jhovany Romo, 33, fired five rounds for a combined total of 13 shots.
Flores was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or civilians were injured.
If Flores survived, he would have faced charges including two counts of attempted murder of a protected person, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting a public officer with a firearm, discharging a firearm where a person may be endangered, and destruction of critical electrical infrastructure, police said.
The department’s Critical Incident Review Team is investigating the shooting and will review the officers’ actions, tactics, and compliance with department policy.
