UPDATE #2: Suspect Involved in Hazelwood Neighborhood Tactical Call Arrested, Shelter Request Lifted

This version adds photos from the incident.
The suspect refused efforts to convince him to surrender for nearly 12 hours. Numerous efforts at de-escalation were made, including communications from the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT). When that was unsuccessful, several types of munitions were used, including flash-sound distraction devices, CS gas, and OC vapor. After deployment of the gas, the suspect climbed up onto the roof of the apartment building. Extensive efforts were made to convince him to come down, including a forward CNT negotiating team, but he continued to refuse.
Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a PPB request for assistance and deployed a bucket truck, lifting a team up to the roof safely with their armor and gear. When confronted by the police on the roof, the suspect grabbed a branch of a nearby tree and used it to swing down to the ground. A K9 and numerous SERT officers were there and immediately took him into custody at 5:32 p.m. He is being evaluated by medical services.
Suspect shortly after being arrested
The suspect will be identified later after he has been booked into jail on criminal charges. Detectives with the Special Victims Unit are primary on the investigation and domestic violence charges are expected. The suspect’s handgun was seized as evidence.
The Portland Police Bureau is grateful for the assistance of Portland Fire & Rescue and East Metro SWAT, who were critical to the successful outcome.
Northeast 122nd Avenue should reopen to traffic shortly after tactical teams have some time to pack up vehicles and equipment. PPB is sincerely grateful for the patience of the community as officers worked through this challenging situation.
