Thunderstorms are expected in Norwich this weekend, with the National Weather Service warning they could turn severe across Southern New England.

AccuWeather expects Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6 to be sunny and warm in Norwich, with the weather turning to thunderstorms Saturday night.

AccuWeather’s forecast for Norwich on June 5 calls for mostly sunny and hot weather, with a high of 90 degrees Fahrenheit. For June 6, AccuWeather is predicting Norwich to be warm, partly cloudy and breezy in the afternoon. AccuWeather expects the high for that day to be 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is the thunderstorm risk?

In a weather graphic on the National Weather Service website for Saturday, the northern part of the Connecticut has a level 2 risk for severe thunderstorms, which means this is a slight risk. The coast is marked with a level 1 risk, which is considered marginal.

The storms will threaten damaging wind and frequent lightning.

If you’re outside and hear thunder, meteorologist Hayden Frank said it’s time to seek indoor shelter.

“If you hear thunder, you’re close enough to get struck by lightning,” he said.

What is the Sunday forecast?

The weather is expected to change drastically on June 7. That day, AccuWeather is predicting it to be mostly cloudy in Norwich with a couple of showers and a thunderstorm. AccuWeather’s forecast calls for an 85% chance of rain on June 7, but only for about two hours. The warm weather is expected to persist that day, as AccuWeather believes the high will be 83 degrees Fahrenheit.
