Kentucky basketball gets a commitment from a five-star prospect

Mark Pope and the UK men’s basketball program are on the board in the 2027 recruiting class.

On Sunday morning, the Cats got a commitment from five-star prospect Ryan Hampton, a 6-foot-6 small forward.

Hampton is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 6 overall prospect in the 2027 class. This makes him the highest-ranked high school player to ever commit to play for Pope in college. Hampton is from Texas, but he plays prep basketball at DME Academy in Florida.

Hampton’s commitment to Kentucky came while he was on a recruiting visit to UK this weekend. Hampton was the first player from the 2027 recruiting class to take an official visit to Kentucky.

While Hampton had been the subject of reclassification rumors, he will remain in the 2027 recruiting class instead of moving up to this year’s class.

Earlier this spring, UK coaches watched Hampton play during a Nike EYBL event in May in Memphis, Tennessee. Pope and members of the Kentucky coaching staff conducted an in-home recruiting visit with Hampton in April.

Hampton told 247Sports that new UK assistant coach Mo Williams played a major role in his decision to commit to Kentucky. Previously in his recruitment, Hampton took visits to LSU, Nebraska and SMU.

The 18-year-old Hampton is one of 19 players in the 2027 recruiting group with a scholarship offer from Kentucky.

Hampton’s older brother is R.J. Hampton, who was a major recruiting target for Kentucky when John Calipari was the program’s head coach. In May 2019, the older Hampton elected to bypass college entirely and begin his pro basketball career in New Zealand. He was then selected as a first-round pick in the 2020 NBA draft.

Hampton’s commitment means the Cats are off to a strong start with the 2027 recruiting class after a poor showing during the 2026 recruiting cycle. UK’s only two high school commits from the 2026 class are four-star point guard Mason Williams and unranked guard Zyon Hawthorne. Williams is a son of Mo Williams and Hawthorne is a younger brother of Kentucky redshirt freshman forward Braydon Hawthorne.

Prior to Hampton’s commitment to Kentucky, the highest-ranked high school prospect to ever commit to Pope out of high school was Jasper Johnson, who was the No. 24-ranked recruit in the 2025 recruiting class. After spending his freshman season at UK, Johnson transferred to Oregon this offseason.

Hampton is also the first top-10 recruit in the 2027 class to make their college commitment. His decision to pick UK, especially as an early commit in the 2027 class, will help build a foundation for the way Pope wants to construct his 2027-28 roster in Lexington.
