Delta flight from London to Seattle declares emergency over Scotland

However, just over an hour into the journey, the flight crew issued a ‘squawk 7700’ code, which indicates an emergency onboard the aircraft, while in the skies above the north of Scotland.

7700 is a squawk code that is reserved for emergency situations and immediately alerts Air Traffic Control (ATC) and other units that the aircraft squawking 7700 is in distress.

Flight data shows the aircraft then made a u-turn before heading for Edinburgh Airport, where it landed safely at around 8:30pm.

The aircraft was then met by emergency services on the tarmac.

Delta confirmed that the decision was made to divert the aircraft after crews reported a potential issue with a floor heater.

A Delta spokesperson told The Herald: “Delta flight 21 from London Heathrow to Seattle diverted to Edinburgh where it landed normally following a reported mechanical issue.

“At Delta, nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and crew. We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels.”

The Herald understands that passengers are to be provided with hotel accommodation and meals for the evening before being reaccommodated on a new flight on Monday.
