Simply Effective
Rachel Zegler, who took part in the ceremony’s tribute to the 50th anniversary of A Chorus Line, performing the show’s signature song, What I Did for Love, wore a draped Michael Kors Collection gown in a rich chocolate-brown shade.
For an actress who often gravitates towards more overtly glamorous red carpet moments, this felt refreshingly restrained. The plunging neckline and softly gathered draping created a silhouette that was elegant, elongated and incredibly flattering.
More than anything, I appreciated the element of surprise. This wasn’t the Rachel Zegler look I expected to see at the Tony Awards.

Easy Does It
Lea Michele’s Michael Kors Collection look occupied a similar space on the spectrum of understated dressing.
The sequinned black skirt suggests something traditionally red carpet ready, but the white tank top immediately shifts the mood. Instead of leaning into full eveningwear, the look embraces a sense of ease.
I can already imagine this becoming a divisive choice. Some will argue that the tank top pushes the outfit too far into casual territory for an awards ceremony. Personally, I think that contrast is exactly what makes it interesting, and I’m glad she resisted the urge to wear the opera gloves seen on the runway.
The simplicity of the top allows the silhouette and proportions to do the work, while the shimmering skirt prevents the look from feeling too relaxed. It may not be the most dramatic ensemble of the night, but it has a confidence that comes from not trying too hard.
