Many Congolese supporters are set to miss out on the 2026 World Cup due to strict travel restrictions linked to Ebola concerns, casting a shadow over fan participation from the Central African nation.
Entry requirements imposed by host countries the United States, Mexico, and Canada have made it extremely difficult for fans from the Democratic Republic of Congo to attend the tournament, despite strong interest and early ticket purchases.
A small, carefully selected group of supporters has been granted permission to travel under strict health monitoring protocols. Among them is Lumumba Vea, who, along with others, will journey through Europe before being allowed to attend a limited number of matches in Mexico.
However, for the majority of fans, the situation remains uncertain. Many who had already secured tickets are now unable to travel and are awaiting clarity on refund requests submitted through the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) to FIFA.
The development has sparked frustration and disappointment among supporters, who had hoped to witness their team on football’s biggest stage. Instead, logistical and health-related barriers have left many sidelined.
