Masked men gathered at a “white lives matter” protest in Glasgow City Centre tonight, as anti-racist groups slammed the “far-right” gathering.
Hundreds of people have been spotted on the steps of Buchanan Galleries following the murder of Henry Nowak. Vickrum Digwa, 23, was sentenced to life imprisonment to serve a minimum of 21 years earlier this month for the murder of 18-year-old Mr Nowak in December.
Angry protests have spawned across the UK since this past week after police body-worn video was released showing Mr Nowak being placed in handcuffs moments before he became unconscious and subsequently died.
Violent demonstrations erupted days ago near to where the teenager died in Southampton after Digwa claimed he had been the victim of a racial attack, while Mr Nowak was handcuffed by police who ignored his pleas that he could not breathe as he lay dying. So far 14 people have been charged.

Protestors have now gathered in Glasgow unfolding a banner reading: “Henry Nowak, stabbed, handcuffed, bleeding, “I can’t breathe”, White Lives Matter.”
The rally has sparked a large police response, with over a dozen cop cars spotted in Glasgow’s Jamaica Street. Photographs seen by the Record show a wall of officers blocking off Glasgow bridge, just off Jamaica Street, as well as Buchanan Street.
Stand Up To Racism Glasgow has slammed the protest and claimed attendees “beat up passers-by” and stole a delivery driver’s bike. The group also alleged that the meeting has been held to “create division” and that many involved are ‘far-right’.

A spokesperson said: “Glaswegians of all backgrounds and and of all faiths and none will stand together against any attempts to spread violence and hatred in our communities. Time and again we have shown the far right a majority of us reject their poison.
“We urge all anti-racists and anti-fascists concerned by these scenes to get involved in SUTR and help prepare to resist racism and the far right in every community.”
Police Scotland has been approached for comment.
