David Harbour didn’t give specifics about his relationship with ex-wife Lily Allen in his Variety cover story, but he was more than ready to chat about Millie Bobby Brown. Harbour, who played Hopper on Stranger Things, shared that he has a positive relationship with Brown, who played his surrogate daughter Jane/Eleven. “There is a special bond there,” he said. “I love her. She loves me.” Last November, ahead of the final season of Stranger Things airing, the Daily Mail reported that Brown had filed a harassment and bullying claim against Harbour before filming began. “There were pages and pages of accusations,” the Mail’s source said at the time. “The investigation went on for months.” Harbour does not deny the report. He instead says that the news “came out in a weird way.”

Brown, who confirmed to Deadline in November that she “felt safe” on set, emailed a new comment to Variety that did gesture at the relationship being fine now. “Over time, our relationship became much more collaborative creatively,” she wrote. “When you work with someone for that many years, we could really push each other emotionally in scenes. Even though the series has ended, there’s still a lot of gratitude. Getting to share that experience with him for so many years is something I’ll always remember and value.”

Harbour compared their contention to family spats. “We worked together for ten years during her formative teenage years, playing father and daughter,” he said. “I don’t know if people have families and friends that you spend a lot of time with for ten years — you occasionally get in arguments, disagreements.” His perspective is that they just had problems they had to work through, and, once they did, their relationship was better. “It was just a simple rupture-and-repair thing that, once we cleared everybody out of the way and talked to each other, we’re fine,” he explained. “Everyone nowadays is very scared of talking about things. People are very scared of being human. It’s unfortunate, because I don’t know how to navigate this weird media world. But it was completely normal, and we adore each other and always have.” Harbour even promised that he’ll work with Brown again. “You’ll see more of me and Millie,” he promised. “Ten years wasn’t enough.”
