Graham Potter fulfils quirky World Cup comment made after Sweden win

And he also fulfilled what had looked a light-hearted throwaway remark made ahead of the World Cup.

The former Albion boss emerged for training with Sweden wearing a cowboy hat to protect him from the sun.

His choice of headwear attracted plenty of attention and highlighted the fact he is back to doing things his own individual, slightly quirky, way in his role as national team head coach.

The Swedish FA posted on X: “There’s a new sheriff in town.”

Potter guided Sweden to the finals via two play-off rounds after they flopped in their qualifying group.

He was very much himself in his days as Albion head coach having arrived from Swedish minnows Ostersunds via a stint at Swansea City.

But he appeared to be putting on something of an act at times when he went to Chelsea – and was less convincing because of it.

Potter has since had an unsuccessful tenure at West Ham but has spoken of how he feels at home in the Sweden post.

After clinching the World Cup place thanks to a Gyokeres hat-trick against Poland in March, Potter told reporters: “I’m going to have a beer and then think, ‘Wow, we’re going to Dallas’.

“I’ll have to dust off my cowboy hat, won’t I?”

He duly delivered in the run-up to his side’s opening game against Tunisia on Sunday.

Potter’s staff in the USA includes former Albion coach Bjorn Hamberg.

They are training in Frisco, north Texas.
