Rural couple describes ‘vacuum’ winds after 3 tornado reports north of KC metro

JAMESON, Mo. (KCTV) – A rural Missouri couple who lives about 2.5 miles east of Jameson on State Highway P stepped outside to assess storm damage Wednesday afternoon, finding uprooted trees, splintered limbs and a power line ripped loose across the highway and thrown into their yard.

Neighbors quickly arrived to help Peggy and Walter Barnett clear debris, including Howard Bailey, who brought a skid loader to clear the driveway.
“Got an awful mess to clean up,” Peggy Barnett said.
Walter Barnett said he heard an alarm on his phone about 4 p.m. and stepped to the front door.
“I was just looking at where the clouds was,” he said.
The Barnetts said they didn’t make it to the basement before the strongest winds hit.
“It was like somebody had a vacuum unit hooked up to the whole house trying to suck the insides out,” Peggy Barnett said.
Walter Barnett said magnets were pulled off their refrigerator and that he nearly was pulled out the door.
“I held on to the wall to keep from going out. And I was holding tight,” he said.
Despite the damage outside, the Barnetts said their house was left untouched — as it was when a tornado damaged a shed on their property about 10 years ago.
“Good Lord taking care of me. That’s all I can say,” Walter Barnett said with a laugh.

KCTV5’s First Warn 5 Weather team said there were three reported tornadoes in the KCTV5 viewing area Wednesday, all north of the Kansas City metro. It can take a day or two for the National Weather Service to confirm whether damage was caused by a tornado, plot a path and issue a rating, but reports received Wednesday included strong video evidence of tornadoes — including one reported in the area where the Barnetts live.
Jameson is about 80 miles northeast of Kansas City.
