While the Mercury have taken a step backwards as a team, sitting at 4-9 after losing in the WNBA Finals last season, Thomas has remained a strong scorer for Phoenix. The six-time All-Star is averaging 15.6 points in 33.4 minutes per game while shooting 50% from the field and seeing a 23.6% usage rate.
Thomas is coming off a 22-point outing vs. the Valkyries on Tuesday, which is the seventh time in 12 games that she has surpassed 15.5 points. Thomas is facing the Wings tonight, who have improved on defense since adding Azi Fudd to the starting lineup. With the No.1 pick in the first unit for the last four games, Dallas ranks seventh in defensive rating. That being said, Fudd is a guard and even with her starting, the Wings have remained very susceptible in the paint, allowing the second-most points in the paint in the league in their last four games.
This bodes extremely well for Thomas, as 65% of her points have come in the painted area and she ranks third in paint points this season (122). Another reason to expect a strong scoring performance from Thomas is that Mercury leading scorer Kahleah Copper could be somewhat limited.
While she isn’t listed on the injury report for tonight, Copper just returned from a one-game absence due to a hip injury Tuesday vs. the Valkyries and she went 3-of-11 from the field for a season-low nine points. Meanwhile, Thomas posted 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting while leading Phoenix with a huge 31.8% usage rate. Thomas seeing an expanded role again tonight is possible and she is a great bet over 15.5 points.
