World Cup fever takes over Waterloo Region with festivities, watch parties

Waterloo Region is preparing to celebrate the first World Cup on home soil, with Team Canada’s first match of the tournament taking place east down Highway 401 at Toronto Stadium.
There are plenty of local organizations who have been planning festivities to celebrate the tournament.
The Downtown Kitchener BIA is hosting a World Cup watch party at Kitchener Market for all of the Canada games this tournament, as well as dozens of others.
“We’ve transformed the Kitchener Market piazza into an ultimate viewing zone,” said Arnold Yescas, Arts and Culture Manager for the Downtown Kitchener BIA.
A 21-foot screen, a licensed bar and activities for the kids will all be featured at the market for the duration of the tournament. The event is family friendly and free to attend.
“We encourage everyone to be loud, cheer for their team, bring their jerseys, bring their flags and support the team they want to support,” said Yescas. “We want to have a really cool, fun and safe atmosphere for everyone to attend.”
The Gaslight District in Cambridge will also be hosting a viewing party in their square, with festivities kicking off for that outdoor watch party at 2:30 p.m.
If you plan on attending the match in-person or hanging out outside the stadium, Metrolinx has enhanced their Go Transit service throughout the tournament.
