Traffic stop result in multiple charges for G1 driver

A Dryden G1 driver faces multiple charges and a seven-day licence suspension after OPP found open alcohol and a cannabis vape during a traffic stop.
DRYDEN – A traffic stop conducted by the Dryden OPP has resulted in multiple charges against a novice driver after officers observed a vehicle being driven erratically.
According to information posted on the OPP Northwest Region Facebook page, officers stopped the vehicle and conducted a search under the Cannabis Control Act.
Dryden OPP confirmed the traffic stop took place at approximately 4 p.m. on June 10. The driver, a 40-year-old man from Vermilion Bay, faces multiple charges after officers located a cannabis vape in the centre console, an open beer can beneath the passenger seat, and an open bottle of whiskey in the rear of the vehicle.
Officers determined the driver was operating the vehicle with a G1 licence without the required accompanying driver. Police also reported the driver registered above the mandatory zero-blood alcohol concentration limit that applies to novice drivers. OPP noted that novice and commercial motor vehicle drivers in Ontario must maintain a blood alcohol concentration of 0 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
As a result, the driver was charged with operating a vehicle as a G1 driver without an accompanying driver, driving as a novice driver with a blood alcohol concentration above zero and having alcohol and cannabis readily available in the vehicle.
The driver’s licence was suspended for seven days.
OPP are reminding motorists that impaired driving, whether involving alcohol, drugs, or a combination, poses a risk on the roads.
UPDATE: This story was updated at 9 a.m. on June 15 to include additional identifying information about the driver.
