Emergency services are on the scene
A stretch of the M62 motorway remains shut this morning hours after a serious crash.
The major motorway is closed on its westbound carriageway between J8 Burtonwood and J7 Rainhill, near Warrington, following the single vehicle collision. The vehicle ‘left the carriageway’ in the crash, which happened at around 4.20am.
Emergency services are on the scene. National Highways has said ‘there is currently no estimated time for reopening as emergency services remain focused on the initial response’.

A full diversion route has been put in place. Drivers have been warned of delays in the area, with congestion on the approach to the closure.
In a statement, National Highways said: “Merseyside Police lead the response to a single vehicle collision which occurred at 04:18am. The vehicle has reported to have left the carriageway.
“The carriageway has been closed to allow emergency services to response to the incident safely. National Highways Traffic Officers are assisting with traffic management.
“There is currently no estimated time for reopening as emergency services remain focused on the initial response.”

According to traffic alert service Inrix, traffic is also heavy on the M62 eastbound near the accident due to onlookers.
Congestion on the westbound side is back to junction nine for Winwick.

Diversion route details
Road users are advised to follow the hollow square diversion symbol visible on local road signs.
- Exit the M62 westbound at J8.
- At the M62 J8 / Charon Way roundabout, take the second exit onto Burtonwood Road southbound.
- At the Burtonwood Road / Westbrook Way roundabout, take the third exit onto Whittle Avenue southbound.
- At the Whittle Avenue / Malvern Close roundabout, take the third exit onto Lingley Green Avenue westbound, passing through four roundabouts.
- At the Lingley Green Avenue / A57 junction, turn right onto the A57 westbound.
- At the A57 / M62 J7 roundabout, take the second exit to re-join the M62 westbound.
