A Devon village pub which appeared doomed after years of closure is to reopen this week following a major refurbishment.

The Red Lion in Tedburn St Mary closed in 2022 an looked certain to be redeveloped into flats.

But the quintessential country pub, loved by generations of villagers, has been reborn thanks to new owners.

In a remarkable turnaround, the pub was purchased, carefully restored and brought back to life by local investment company EGN Services, whose founders share a personal connection to the pub.

The couple first met at The Red Lion during its heyday and have long held a vision of seeing thrive once again at the heart of village life.

The pub will open its doors once again for walk-ins on Wednesday, June 17. Celebrations are planned on Saturday when a ribbon-cutting takes place. The community choir will perform, live music will be played and BBQ and full menu will be up and running.

Photos show the pub has been extensively refurbished. The renovation has a strong focus on preserving the character and heritage of the old building while introducing modern enhancements.

The owners say: “This pub holds very special memories for both of us. “It has always been more than just a building, it’s part of our story.

“Seeing it closed was incredibly sad and bringing it back to life is something we’ve dreamed of for years.”

There were real fears the historic building could be lost when plans were submitted to replace it with flats in 2024.

Local tradespeople have been used wherever possible during the renovation. The owners say the result is a place which honours the past while also bringing something fresh and exciting, welcoming locals and visitors alike.

“Our vision is simple, say the owners. “To bring back The Red Lion as a warm, welcoming and thriving village pub, a place where everyone feels comfortable, where friendships are made, and where new memories can be created. Just as they were for so many years before.”

Wednesday’s reopening will be on a walk-in basis from 12pm. There will be a grab and go breakfast available 8am to 10.30am Monday to Saturday.

The main reopening is on Saturday. Former owners Les and Di will do the ribbon cutting at 12pm and they’ll be a DJ into the evening. From Sunday, guests will be able to pre-book from the menu.
