Heavy rain, flooding and severe weather to move over Gulf Coast Thursday

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Tropical Storm Arthur’s remnants will move over the Gulf Coast on Thursday, bringing multiple hazards to the area. A StormTracker Alert Day has been declared as heavy rain, dangerous surf, and the potential for isolated tornadoes impact the region.

Heavy Rain and Flooding Threat

The primary concern Thursday will be significant rainfall. Rain totals between 5 to 7 inches are expected across in some locations in the forecast area, with some isolated spots potentially receiving even higher amounts. The heaviest rain and most significant flooding problems are expected in inland portions of the forecast area, where a band of heavier rain will settle. As the day progresses into the afternoon, the most intense rain and storms will shift closer to the coast.

Residents in flood-prone areas should prepare for possible street and property flooding. Monitor local road conditions and avoid driving through flooded areas.

Dangerous Surf and Coastal Flooding

A High Surf Advisory remains in effect Thursday and Friday, with surf heights between 5 to 7 feet and dangerous rip currents expected. Tides will run 1 to 2 feet above normal, creating conditions favorable for coastal flooding. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for vulnerable coastal areas.

Beachgoers should stay out of the water. If you must be near the shore, stay away from the water’s edge and be aware of dangerous rip currents.

Isolated Tornado Threat

While tornadoes are not expected to be widespread, isolated tornadoes are possible Thursday as the remnant tropical bands move through the area. These tornadoes could develop quickly with little warning, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours as storms become better organized.

We will be monitoring radar closely throughout the day. Stay with us for updates and be ready to take shelter if a tornado warning is issued for your area.

Extended Outlook

Rain chances remain elevated on Friday for Juneteenth, dropping to 70%, which means there may be some breaks in the action as the system moves away.

Saturday and Sunday will bring more typical summertime weather with scattered showers and thunderstorms returning during daytime hours. High temperatures will climb closer to 90 degrees for Father’s Day weekend.

Next week looks much drier with sunshine returning and hot, humid conditions settling in across the Gulf Coast.
