Ben Shelton vs David Goffin Match Preview

American No. 2 Ben Shelton is having one of the seasons of his lifetime so far. The 22-year-old achieved his career-best outing at three out of the four majors – barring the US Open. Shelton began the year with a semifinal showing in Melbourne Park, and followed it up with some mediocre performances until April. This is when he had another burst by reaching the final of the BMW Open in Munich. Semifinals in Stuttgart and Washington DC acted as predecessors to a monumental title charge at the Canada Masters. Shelton has a 2025 win-loss record of 37-18.

34-year-old David Goffin is currently ranked No. 83 in the world. The Belgian’s campaign kicked off on a significant low, with five consecutive losses leaving him with problems to solve. However, a quarterfinal finish in Acapulco gave him an important push and momentum followed. Goffin reached Round-3 in Miami, which included a titanic triumph over current World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz. While the former Top-10 star also reached the quarterfinals in Munich, his recent outings have been far from satisfactory. Goffin beat Muller 6-7(6) 6-1 6-1 in the Round of 128 here in Shanghai.

Ben Shelton vs David Goffin ATP Shanghai Masters 2025 Prediction

Shelton will be using the match to test whether he is at 100% in terms of match fitness. The American is a clear favorite to win this match, owing to his superiority on serve and his powerful forehand follow-up. An attacking southpaw who enjoys cross-court exchanges, Shelton will look to keep Goffin on the move with his pinpoint angles. While the Belgian will look to charge forward after targeting the Shelton backhand, it is certainly the shot where the 22-year-old has improved the most.

Prediction: Ben Shelton in straight sets.
