The force said the man was pronounced deceased at the scene by the ambulance service.
His death is not being treated as suspicious while the coroner has been notified and his next of kin has been informed.
Following the incident, the shop was closed for the remainder of Wednesday due to “unforeseen circumstances”.
A spokesperson for the police said: “Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”
South Western Ambulance Service confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that it attended to the incident.
A Waitrose spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened to hear about the death of one of our customers yesterday.
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the gentleman’s family and friends, and we are grateful to the paramedics and our partners for their quick response.”
