The idea sounded ludicrous on its face: If the United States beat Paraguay by three or more goals in the first round of the World Cup, everyone watching the game at Tallboy, a neighborhood bar attached to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, would get their entire tab on the house. Anyone who’d watched the U.S. lose friendly matches by two goals to Portugal or by three to Belgium this year surely wouldn’t make that bet themselves.
