Police identify 60-year-old who died in SW Portland motorcycle crash on I-5

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – Police have released the name of a 60-year-old man who died in a motorcycle crash Friday evening on Interstate 5 in southwest Portland.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, Jason Doherty of Newberg was driving a 2002 Harley Davidson with a sidecar south on I-5 shortly before 6:30 p.m.

After Doherty took a left turn off the Marquam Bridge, his motorcycle suddenly swerved out of the traffic lane and crashed into a concrete barrier.

A Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crew happened to be passing by and stopped to try and give Doherty lifesaving care, but were not successful.

Police said investigators have not been able to determine why Doherty or his bike swerved out of his lane.

According to police, Doherty was wearing a half-shell novelty helmet which has not been approved by the Department of Transportation.

I-5 South was closed at the bridge for most of the evening on Friday.

Anyone with information about the crash who has not yet spoken to police is asked to contact PPB and reference case number is 26-178327.

According to police, Doherty is the 20th person to die in connection to traffic this year in Portland, and the eighth involving a motorcycle or gas-powered scooter.
