Huge fire breaks out in Widnes as plume of smoke seen for miles around

Residents from miles around have reported seeing plumes of thick black smoke rising into the air.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that crews are tackling a large fire at a recycling facility in Widnes.
Residents in the vicinity are urged to keep their windows and doors shut to prevent any smoke inhalation.

The fire service was called to the scene on Everite Road at around 4.30pm.
Fire engines from Widnes, Runcorn, Penketh, Congleton, Warrington, Frodsham, and Northwich fire stations are in attendance.
A fire service spokesman said: “Eight fire engines are dealing with a large fire involving around 700 tonnes of waste cardboard in a single-storey building measuring approximately 50m by 50m.
“The fire has spread rapidly and is causing a heavy plume of smoke.

“A such, nearby residents and businesses are advised to keep windows and doors closed.
“Owing to the risk of the building collapsing, firefighters are tackling the blaze from the exterior.
“All persons are accounted for, and no casualties have been reported.
“Cheshire Police is managing traffic in the area. Further updates to follow.”
