First Warn Update: New data looks stormier for parts of match day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – We have a First Warn for Thursday, with rain that could impact several big outdoor events, including the match at Kansas City Stadium. If you’re running kids around, commuting, or heading to an event, plan on quick weather changes and pack the rain gear.
What’s New
Downpours and thunderstorms have developed within the metro this afternoon, with more likely through 5 pm. Torrential rain, lightning, and gusty winds that has already brought an evacuation at Fan Fest, with impacts and delays possible to the match. The rest of the overall picture remains the same, but this detail bears watching.

Rain Timing
- Mid-afternoon (Fan Fest): At least moderate impacts to events outside are expected. This will be scattered light to moderate rain, but embedded heavy downpours and thunderstorms will also mix in. Temperatures sit in the 70s.
- Evening (match time): This is the most likely window for storms (4–7 PM best chance, up to 70%). A Level 1/5 severe risk is in place for the KC metro (higher risk farther south), with a low chance for a gusty cluster of storms to pass by.
- Tonight: Storms may continue with heavy rain and lightning (60–70%), trending drier closer to midnight, then another round is possible Friday morning.
The Bottom Line
Plan on rain at times this afternoon and evening. We likely catch lulls and mix in dry hours between the showers, but waves of rain with occasional brief downpours are a likely outcome. We will likely get most events in today, but they will be damp and quick delays may occur.
Quick ‘on-the-go’ checklist
Keep a poncho/umbrella in the car, allow extra drive time, and remember that umbrellas are not allowed at the match.
Flood Watch: Thursday into early Friday
A Flood Watch is in effect Thursday into early Friday, with the potential for 1–3 inches of rain and localized pockets of 4+ inches, most likely along and south of I-70. What we are seeing is a swath of widespread heavy rain south of the area, but our region is on the northern fringe of this cluster of heavy rain-producing storms. This means while we don’t expect all neighborhoods to get heavy rain, a few small zones could get focused, heavy rain that causes flooding.
After Today
- Friday: We may have some lingering morning rain, then drier with highs near 80. A 2nd round of spotty storms is possible in the mid-afternoon, but a better chance south of Kansas City. A few of those could have stout winds with a Level 1/5 risk for severe weather.
- Saturday: The next match day is hotter and humid with highs in the upper 80s. It will feel like 95 with the humidity factored in. The rain chance is low, but not zero. A few afternoon and evening t-storms are possible with odds at 30%.
- Sunday: A heat wave begins with highs in the low 90s and a heat index of 100-105.
