In an absolutely unreal rally following an early deficit, Ecuador has defied the odds to beat group leader Germany here in New Jersey.
The team’s mistakes cost the players early on when Germany scored in the 2nd minute to earn the lead. But the 9th minute goal from Nilson Angulo brought a confidence that swept through the rest of the match.
The second half was dominated by Ecuador, as Germany seemed to lack any sense of urgency. But Ecuador, which had only 1 point entering the match, was hungry for a big win. And the belief from Ecuador’s supporters was loud.
Gonzalo Plata became a national hero today with his deflection in the 77th minute to put the team ahead.
There are tears among Ecuador’s fans after a heart-stopping final few minutes when Germany finally woke up and tried to score again. The supporters started singing a few minutes after the final whistle blew, and the team exchanged hugs on the field.
