Lakers Reveal LeBron James and Luka Doncic Preseason Playing Status Update

While the Los Angeles Lakers suffered an early exit in the postseason months ago, they’re looking toward the first full season for Luka Doncic. Additionally, NBA superstar LeBron James, while not at the same level he was in his younger days, will return to try to capture another championship alongside his star teammate.
They’ve also added players to the squad as they attempt to build upon last season’s success. In particular, newcomers Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton bring veteran experience, as both stars have also participated in the playoffs and, more importantly, in the NBA Finals.
This past week, the Lakers participated in their training camp and practices. Friday night brings their first preseason matchup as the purple and gold take on the Phoenix Suns.
Often, the preseason games allow coaches to give newer roster members, including rookies and offseason acquisitions, some playing time in a game setting. Unfortunately, fans won’t be able to see LeBron or Luka on the court with the team for Friday’s game, though.

Earlier in the day, Bleacher Report reported that LeBron is out with irritation in his glute muscle, while Doncic is sitting out for rest purposes.
LeBron, who is entering his 23rd season, turns 41 in December. The global superstar averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game for the Lakers last season.
While he’s proven chiefly indestructible and healthy during his career, LeBron’s been sidelined by various injuries since joining the Lakers. However, he participated in 70 games last season and 71 the season before that.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Doncic will also sit out the Lakers’ second preseason game against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday. This decision was made by the Lakers’ performance team, along with Doncic, following his participation in the EuroBasket tournament for Slovenia.
McMenamin also reported that Marcus Smart won’t play due to left Achilles tendinopathy, as well as Maxi Kleber due to a quad injury, and rookie Adou Thiero, who has left knee swelling.
Having their main players rested and healthy when the season officially begins makes sense. The team will have its first regular-season game on Oct. 21 versus Golden State.
With LeBron and Doncic sidelined, it opens the door for some of the team’s other players to get some time on the court. That could include their offseason acquisitions, Jake LaRavia and Ayton.
