Argentina entered the 2026 World Cup as the No. 1 overall team in the FIFA world rankings. Is Lionel Messi’s squad holding on to that mark following the group stage?
For now, the reigning World Cup champions remain perched atop the FIFA men’s world ranking. Argentina was able to cement its ranking by winning all three of its group stage matches, including a 3-1 victory over Jordan on Saturday, June 27.
Even so, France has given Argentina a run for its money. Les Bleus have seesawed with La Albiceleste while winning all three of their group stage matches against Senegal, Iraq and Norway.
France – the 2026 World Cup favorites – may ultimately be able to overtake Argentina in the FIFA rankings before the tournament’s end. If not, several other teams will be looking to rise to the top of the list as they seek a World Cup title.
Just 32 countries remain in the mix at the World Cup with the group stage over. Each squad will face a great deal of pressure in the single-elimination knockout phase, and even minor upsets could drastically reshape the world’s soccer power structure.
