Race is part of politics in a multiethnic democracy like America’s. The statements politicians make and the policies they advocate — on issues from taxes and redistribution to voting and redistricting to, of course, immigration and the border — are sometimes influenced by racial and ethnic sympathies. The Supreme Court grappled uncomfortably with that reality in Thursday’s ruling on President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw temporary deportation protections from Haitian nationals.
