Palestra hails Alonso among ‘the best managers in the world’ as he joins Chelsea from Atalanta

Palestra had been linked with Italian champions Internazionale, but will join a Chelsea side looking to rebuild after a turbulent season in which they finished 10th in the Premier League and failed to qualify for Europe.The defender, who registered a goal and four assists in Serie A last term, is capable of playing on either flank, both as a wing-back and a more conventional full-back.”A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world,” Palestra told the club website.
“I’m very excited to get started. I’ve felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me. I can’t wait to start, see all the fans, my team-mates and the manager.
“We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League.”
The Italian explained that Alonso was a big influence in his decision to join The Blues, labeling the former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen coach as “one of the best managers in the world”.
“It was very important,” says Palestra. “I feel a lot of energy from him. Also, he is one of the best managers in the world – he won (the league title) at Bayer Leverkusen. It’s important for me to have Xabi Alonso as the manager.
“I have had two conversations with him, and I’m very happy because he told me what he wanted from me. I’m very happy to know him and to start training with Chelsea.”
Palestra made his senior debut for Atalanta in December 2023 and went on to make 16 appearances for the first team, before making 37 appearances on loan at Cagliari last term.
The defender has two caps for Italy, having made his international debut in March.
His arrival at Chelsea follows the departure of full-back Marc Cucurella, who has moved to Real Madrid in a £51.8 million deal.
