Hinesburg among towns dropping Fourth of July fireworks as costs double

HINESBURG, Vt. (WCAX) – Hinesburg is among Vermont towns that will not have a fireworks display this Fourth of July after the cost of putting one on became untenable.

The town learned last fall that Northstar Fireworks, which previously handled displays across Vermont, no longer does them. Pennsylvania-based Pyrotecnico now fills that role, but at a significantly higher minimum cost — jumping from $12,500 to a minimum of $20,000.

The Hinesburg Selectboard decided the price was too high. “They made a hard decision. Municipal budgets are always tight,” said Jen McCuin, Hinesburg’s recreation director. “People are disappointed, of course they are.”

Residents who still want to see fireworks have options nearby. Bristol is holding its Independence Day celebration at the Mt. Abraham Union High School and Bristol rec club area, with fireworks funded through a mix of town money, sponsorships, and vendor fees.

“Honestly, the community gave us a lot of money for us to have these fireworks,” said Meridith McFarland, a Bristol Fourth of July Committee member. McFarland said Bristol is ready to welcome Hinesburg neighbors to the celebration.

Rutland is reviving its fireworks for the first time in several years after a grassroots fundraising effort.

Burlington is also preparing for a larger crowd. “We definitely welcome all attendees across the region. We are prepared for a large event,” said the city’s Phil Lewis.
