A tornado was spotted near the village of Edam, Sask., on Friday, Environment Canada said amid a flurry of weather warnings.
An alert sent at 4:05 p.m. CST also warned of high winds, intense rainfall and large hail.
“This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” the alert from Environment and Climate Change Canada said.
“Take cover immediately in a basement, interior room, or a sturdy shelter when threatening weather approaches. If no shelter is available, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.”
That alert has since been downgraded to an orange severe thunderstorm warning.
Red tornado alerts were also issued Friday afternoon for Perdue, about 60 kilometres west of Saskatoon, and also Glaslyn, Battlefords Provincial Park, Parry and Pangman. Those alerts said Environment Canada was tracking weather that could produce tornadoes.
Meteorologist Brian Luzny said the federal agency received reports earlier Friday afternoon about a landspout tornado in the Biggar area. That was the start of a handful of tornado warnings.
“It’s quite an active severe weather day,” the Environment Canada meteorologist said in an interview.
A tornado alert was issued for Saskatoon and communities south of Saskatchewan’s largest city shortly before 7 p.m. CST.
At the time, only one other tornado alert remained active in the province, west of Weyburn.
