DC heat forces temporary closure of National Mall ‘State Fair’ as 4th of July celebrations get underway
The oppressive heat and humidity in Washington, DC, forced the temporary closure of the Great American State Fair on the National Mall Friday as organizers reacted on the fly to what the National Weather Service described as “dangerously hot conditions.”
Attendees were ordered shortly after 1 p.m. ET to “proceed to the nearest exit” as the fair announced it would not reopen until evening.
“The safety and well-being of our guests, volunteers, performers, vendors, and staff is our highest priority,” organizers said in a statement. “Conditions are expected to improve later this afternoon, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back at 5:00 p.m.”

Fair organizers had set up five water stations around the site — with ice also available.
“It is miserably hot and humid today,” wrote Fox News congressional correspondent Bill Melugin on X, adding that it “genuinely feels like a sauna when you step outside.”
The NWS has issued “extreme heat warnings” for the national capital region between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with the heat index set to go as high as 115 degrees.
Despite the daunting forecast, Friday night’s annual “A Capitol Fourth” concert will go ahead as planned.
The show on the West Lawn of the US Capitol gets underway at 8 p.m., with gates opening at 7 p.m. to minimize spectators’ time outside.

“A Capitol Fourth,” featuring performances by military bands and special guests, has been held every year since 1980 — with the exception of 2020 and 2021, when performances were pre-recorded due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The concert is broadcast on PBS as well as online, and organizers reminded those on the fence about attending that “people can watch from the comfort of their homes.”

“With all this heat and humidity in the atmosphere comes a lot of potential energy, and unfortunately this ridge, this high pressure area just starts to break down tomorrow, so that sets the stage for what could be some very powerful thunderstorms,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Dan Hofmann told WTOP News.
Despite the weather, Freedom 250 has promised a “safe, well-prepared, and truly memorable celebration of America’s 250th birthday.”
The Great American State Fair and FIFA Fan Zone will still open at 10 a.m. Saturday, and will remain open until the end of the “Salute to America” programming.

Saturday will feature 33 different flyovers between 1:14 p.m. and 10:36 p.m., featuring NASA F-5s, US Army Force fleets, US Navy demonstrations, Thunderbirds, and B-1s.
To accommodate the potentially dangerous heat, Freedom 250 has pushed back the opening of the gates of the Washington Monument Grounds to 5 p.m. to “reduce prolonged exposure to heat.” The organizers encourage guests to arrive at the grounds no earlier than 4 p.m.
“The safety and well-being of every guest remains our top priority as well as celebrating this historic 250th Independence Day,” the organizers said in a statement, adding that they have coordinated with emergency and safety personnel to “adjust event timing and expand cooling resources, water stations, and medical support across the grounds.”

Freedom 250 recommends using free hydration stations across the Mall; take breaks from the sun by going into air-conditioned booths, misting areas, or shade; dress in light-weight, light-colored clothing; and pay attention to younger children, older adults, pregnant women and people with chronic conditions. On-site medical units are available in case of any heat or health issues.
For those unable or unwilling to attend in person, a livestream of the “Salute to America” event will start at 7 p.m. on the Freedom 250 website.
The firework show will consist of 850,000 projectiles launched from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, eight Potomac River barges, and sites in West Potomac Park starting at 10:30 p.m.

President Trump is expected to make remarks at 9:45 p.m and speak for about 45 minutes. On Wednesday, Trump joked that he would give a longer speech, just to spite the extreme heat and doubters of his physical capabilities.
“By the way, on July 4th, it’s going to be approximately 107 degrees out,” he said outside the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota, “and I’m gonna go and I’m gonna make a really long speech just to show that I can do anything.”
