Hibs complete Azeem Abdulai transfer as deal length and David Gray reaction revealed

The 23-year-old joins from Leyton Orient on a three-year deal and bolsters head coach David Gray’s options in midfield, where he can operate as a six or an eight.

Head coach David Gray said: “Azeem is exactly the profile we wanted – he’s athletic, aggressive, technically secure on the ball and will play box-to-box.”

Gray added that Abdulai’s arrival in Ireland before the end of the club’s pre-season training camp will help him settle quickly into the squad and get up to speed with his new team-mates.

“He gives us more options in the midfield area, and that creates a healthy competition for places.

“We are excited to have him on board, and we’re all looking forward to working with him.”

Sporting director Malky Mackay added: “I’m delighted to welcome Azeem to Hibernian.

“He has the qualities we look for in the players we recruit and is a young, hungry and determined player to add to the group.

“He already has valuable experience in the English Championship and League One for someone of his age.

“He’s another ambitious, young Scottish player coming into the squad and we’re really excited to see what he can bring to Hibs.”

Glasgow-born Abdulai spent time with Celtic and Leicester City at youth level, before starting his senior career with Swansea City.

He then moved to Leyton Orient on a two-and-a-half-year deal in January 2025 and racked up 65 appearances, scoring five goals and providing two assists.

Abdulai was capped six times by Scotland at under-21 level, sharing a pitch with current Hibs midfielder Josh Mulligan and former Easter Road figures such as Kieron Bowie and Josh Doig.

He also lined up alongside Mykola Kuharevich at Swansea, and Dylan Levitt, Demetri Mitchell and Tom James during his time at Leyton Orient.
