Independence Day impacts: First Warn for rounds of storms

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Our 4th of July holiday brings a series of weather roadblocks, but there are a lot of positives baked into the forecast as well.

A large rain system is pushing through the region with downpours, lightning, thunder, and gusty winds possible.

Showers and storms hang around even into the early/mid afternoon, though they won’t be for everyone.

After this first round of rain, we enter a brief lull in the heart of the afternoon. Cloud cover will break up and allow temperatures to warm to only the mid-80s. Today’s heat warnings and advisories have been lifted due to this morning’s rain. This is all ahead of our next potential round of storms, though that one is uncertain.

This afternoon and evening storm threat completely depends on how long the morning round lasts. For example, if the morning rain is finished well before lunchtime, then we’ll find stronger and more numerous storms in the 4 pm to 8 pm window. This timeframe is when you need to remain really flexible. If thunder roars, make sure you go indoors. Our severe weather risk has even grown on the south side of the metro to a level 2 out of 5 with gusty winds as the biggest concern. It’s not a guarantee that we will get this second round of storms, but given the 4th of July plans that many of us have, it’s essential that you plan ahead accordingly!

Thankfully, we look to dry out by about 10 pm, leaving room for beautiful fireworks displays tonight.

SUNDAY: A few morning showers are possible, but only for a few of us. Temperatures will be relatively “cooler,” bringing an end to this week-long stretch of intense heat. Expect highs in the mid 80s and feels-like temperatures in the 90 to 95 degree range. Isolated pop-up thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon, but severe weather is not a concern.
