A former top cop with the Vernon RCMP has pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon.

Steven McVarnock was a superintendent with the Vernon detachment for just under three years and on Friday he entered a guilty plea in a Bella Coola courtroom.

The assault with a weapon charge stems from a July 29, 2025, incident in Hagensborg, a community near Bella Coola.

Following the guilty plea, the court ordered a pre-sentence report, along with a psychological/psychiatric report.
The next court appearance is on Sept. 16, at 9:30 a.m. to confirm the reports have been completed.

McVarnock also served on the board of the John Howard Society when it changed its name to Turning Points Collaborative Society in June 2018.

McVarnock was the board chairperson at the time.
