FHP: 78-year-old man killed in fiery crash at McDonald’s parking lot in Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A 78-year-old Tallahassee man died Saturday after a fiery single-vehicle crash in the parking lot of a McDonald’s, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened around 11:49 a.m. at the McDonald’s at 3631 Mahan Drive. FHP reported the man was driving a modified, street-legal race car westbound in the parking lot when he lost control while accelerating through a left-hand curve.

The vehicle struck a concrete curb, causing a nitrous oxide tank to tear and ignite, troopers said. The car then hit several trees, a retaining wall and a guardrail before coming to a stop fully engulfed in flames, according to FHP.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

FHP said Leon County EMS, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office and Leon County Fire Rescue assisted at the scene.
