Despite storms and heat, 4th of July fireworks show goes on in Pittsburgh

The skies of downtown Pittsburgh lit up Saturday evening in one of the largest fireworks displays in the city’s history as thousands of viewers celebrated the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.
The show saw tens of thousands of colorful explosives launched from barges on Pittsburgh’s three rivers and the rooftop of the Wyndham Grand Hotel.
The fireworks show got a late start, going off at 10 p.m. — a half-hour later than scheduled.
The display went on despite persistent heat and humidity and intermittent thunderstorms throughout the afternoon. Much of the city’s Independence Day programming scheduled for Point State Park and the North Shore was scrapped because of the weather.
That led many to take refuge in places like Acrisure Stadium, where hundreds gathered to keep dry and watch two other red-white-and-blue nations — France and Paraguay — face off on large screens broadcasting the FIFA World Cup.
