Reuben Owen confessed ‘that’s the end of my road’ after encountering a significant blow during Life in the Dales.

The TV personality, who rose to fame with his mother Amanda Owen, father Clive Owen and siblings on Our Yorkshire Farm, now features in his own Channel 5 series documenting his journey establishing a machinery enterprise.

In tonight’s (7 July) instalment of Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales, which was first broadcast last year, he set out to complete a 100-mile journey in vintage tractors alongside his girlfriend Jessica Ellwood and friends to mark his 21st birthday.

The group intended to travel all the way to Whitby in tractors capable of reaching only approximately 16mph, hoping to commemorate Reuben’s milestone birthday on the beach with traditional fish and chips.

Unfortunately, early in the expedition, Reuben encountered a serious problem when his tractor malfunctioned and began billowing smoke, reports the Mirror.

Stranded at the roadside, the young star required assistance from his closest friend Tommy.

As Ellwood travelled behind him, she called out: “Something smells rather hot.” Noticing liquid escaping from the vehicle, she warned: “Reuben you have got a massive leak.”

Owen and his companions quickly identified the need for antifreeze and water to address the overheating, but having neglected to pack either, the television star resorted to using his drinking water.

He subsequently replaced the fanbelt in an attempt to prevent further complications during the remainder of the expedition.

However, their journey took a dramatic twist as they tackled Sutton Bank in North Yorkshire, notorious for being one of Britain’s steepest inclines.

Reuben confessed: “I am not confident here – this is going to take some doing. I am very nervous.” Moments later, the tractor veered off the roadside, with Owen dismounting as plumes of smoke billowed from the engine.

Looking dejected, Reuben remarked: “I think that’s the end of my road.” Fortunately, Tommy arrived with a tow rope and hauled Owen’s stricken tractor to safety.

“It’s not gone well for the old lass,” Owen observed, suggesting this might be the vehicle’s last outing. Yet, after allowing it time to cool down, he successfully restarted it, lifting everyone’s spirits.

Unfortunately, another obstacle emerged when an oil leak was discovered in his tractor, forcing them to replace the head gasket during the night.

Despite numerous challenges along the way, they successfully reached Whitby. Reuben was utterly surprised when his girlfriend presented him with a cake featuring his photograph.

The group erupted in laughter as Reuben quipped: “What an awful picture!” Following a heartwarming celebration, Reuben expressed his gratitude to everyone, describing the expedition as unforgettable.

He added: “It’s been brilliant, thank you. We have gone right across Yorkshire, from one side to the other, on our tractors. It has been the adventure of a lifetime really, thinking about it. I couldn’t imagine spending my 21st in a better way.”

Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales is available to watch on Channel 5.
