Person of interest in 2 Pierce County homicides killed by police in Oregon

A 24-year-old man identified as a person of interest in two Pierce County homicide investigations was shot and killed by police Wednesday in Seaside, Oregon, according to authorities.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday night that detectives were no longer looking for Hayes McCloud after the encounter with Seaside police.

Earlier Wednesday evening, PCSO spokesperson Carly Cappetto confirmed to KOMO News that McCloud had contact with Seaside police but said additional information about what occurred there would come from the Seaside Police Department.

Earlier in the day, investigators identified McCloud as a person of interest in two homicide investigations at different locations in Pierce County. Investigators had said he was believed to be driving a silver 1996 Toyota 4Runner with Washington license plate CWW5132 and was considered armed and dangerous.

The first incident occurred near Puyallup but outside the city limits.

In the Puyallup-area case, deputies were dispatched at 2:40 a.m. to the 12500 block of Woodland Avenue East after reports of a man found dead at a home.

The early investigation indicates homicidal violence occurred in a bedroom before extending outside the home, though the 35-year-old victim was ultimately found inside with several fatal injuries, Cappetto told KOMO News.

The second incident happened about 30 minutes later in Tacoma, where a man with several apparent gunshot wounds was found dead.

Tacoma police said the victim was found in a neighborhood near East 69th Street and East D Street at about 3 a.m.

Detectives and crime scene technicians are investigating the death as a homicide.

Police said it is unclear where the victim was at the time of the shooting or whether he lived nearby.
